Kevin began his coaching career at 15 as a developmental coach. After high school, he transitioned to coaching in the NVSL, spending two years with Springboard before dedicating seven years to Riverside Gardens, where his teams won four division championships. Now in his eleventh season with Pinecrest, Kevin has led the team to victory in 3 out of the last 4 division championships, helping the team advance from Division 7 to Division 4.
In addition to coaching at Pinecrest, Kevin is a high school PE teacher at South Lakes High School in Reston, VA, where he also coaches the swim team. He is a youth and adult triathlon coach for Endorphin Fitness. Kevin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education from George Mason University (2011) and a Master’s Degree in Sports Management (2015).
Ashlyn Diederich returns for her fourth season as Assistant Coach for Pinecrest. With over 16 years of competitive swimming experience, Ashlyn has competed with prestigious clubs including Potomac Marlins, Machine Aquatics, and NVSL teams Pinecrest and Fox Mill Estates. Throughout her swimming career, she earned recognition through NVSL Divisionals, Relay Carnival, Relay All-Stars, and Individual All-Stars, and currently holds records at both Fox Mill Estates and Pinecrest.
Ashlyn swam for South Lakes High School, contributing to district, regional, and state-level success, while also competing in sectionals with Machine Aquatics. She began coaching at age 13 as a “coach in training” for Fox Mill Estates and has continued coaching in various roles since 2018. In 2021, she joined Pinecrest as both a swimmer and a summer and winter technique coach.
Ashlyn recently graduated a year early from the Honors Program at the University of Mary Washington with a degree in Business Administration and minor in Law and Philosophy. She is currently pursuing her MBA at UMW while competing in her final year of eligibility on the university’s varsity women’s swim team. Outside of athletics, Ashlyn serves as the Aquatics Coordinator of Goolrick Pool at UMW and also serves as President of Women in Business and President of the Sports Management Club.
Ken is excited to be joining the Pinecrest Piranhas for his fourth year as technique coach and his eighth season as a swimmer before swimming at the division 1 level at the University of Delaware next year.
He holds the team record in the 50 breaststroke and 100 IM and has qualified for NVSL All-Stars the last four seasons being seeded first. A graduating senior at South Lakes High School, Ken holds the school records in the 100 breaststroke and 200 Individual Medley (IM), 50 freestyle, and a 200 medley relay. In 2025 and 2026, Ken earned an All-American consideration time in the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke for the Virginia Highschool Swim League.
Ken trains year-round with Nation’s Capital Swim Club and has multiple qualifying times for the U.S. Summer and Winter Junior Nationals, NCSAs, Futures, and Sectionals meets.
Ken loves the sport of swimming and is committed to helping young swimmers reach their full potential. He’s excited to offer individual lessons and support Pinecrest’s next generation of All-Stars!
Liam Birch is so excited to be coaching this summer once again, and cannot wait for the season to start!
Liam is a graduating senior from high school and has swam for Pinecrest since he was 4 years old. Liam has qualified for Divisionals and All-Stars multiple times throughout his time at Pinecrest, and has also previously won the most spirited award.
Additionally, Liam also swims for the Fairfax Foxes, as well as the South Lakes swim team, where he has swam for the District and State swim team.
Liam will attend the University of Minnesota in the fall majoring in Mathematics to eventually become a math teacher.
Liam will also be offering private lessons this summer for those who are interested.
Isla is excited to be back for another season. She has been a dedicated member of Pinecrest Swim Team since she was just 8 years old. She competed year round for HAC and Water Wolves as well as swam for South Lakes swim team. Over the years she has earned multiple High Point awards and podium medals during Divisionals as well as competing in All Star Relays. Isla is returning for her second year of coaching, she absolutely loves working with the younger athletes and helping them become better swimmers. Isla is super excited for the upcoming season, and cannot wait to cheer on her swimmers.
Charles Gibson is excited to return to the Pinecrest coaching staff for another season as a Junior Coach. A Piranha since age 6, Charles has been a regular A Meet swimmer, multiple-time divisional qualifier, and member of the \All-Star Relay team. He swims year-round with YORK Swim Club. At South Lakes High School, he is a varsity swimmer who qualified this past season for the District, Regional, and State teams, and was part of the record-breaking medley relay team that set a new school record.
Charles has coached the Polar Piranhas for three seasons and worked throughout the winter as a Polar Piranhas coach, helping younger swimmers build confidence and improve their technique. He has earned both the Spirit Award and Coach’s Awards from Head Coach Mallon. He is also the head sparring instructor at Life Champ Martial Arts, where he has been teaching Taekwondo for five years and is a favorite among students.
Charles brings strong leadership, energy, and team spirit to every practice and will also be offering private swim lessons this summer for families who are interested.
Carlyn has been a swimmer with Pinecrest since she was 5 years old. She is thrilled to be joining the coaching team this summer and share her love for swimming. During her time at Pinecrest she has swam in divisional meets and relay carnivals for the past 7 years. Carlyn also has been a member of the Potomac Marlins swim team for 6 years, during that time she has participated in qualifying meets such as the Winter Classic and ISCA. Most recently, as a freshman at South Lakes; Carlyn became a member of the Swim team, where she qualified for Districts. While swimming is a favorite, Carlyn also plays field hockey and lacrosse for South Lakes. She is ready for summer and a great season, Go Piranhas!
Maya has been a swimmer on the Pinecrest Swim Team for 11 years, and has been a swim coach for the past 2. This is her third year coaching, and she is excited to continue working with everyone.
During her time at Pinecrest, she has swam in Divisionals 9 times and has qualified for Individual All-Stars 6 times. As a rising senior at South Lakes High School, Maya has been a member of the Varsity Swim Team, where she has qualified for Districts and Regionals all 3 years. When not in the summer season, Maya swims for the Potomac Marlins where she has qualified for many high caliber swim meets. Outside of swimming, Maya enjoys playing Varsity and Travel Softball. Sebi Iglesias is a year round competitive swimmer and has been swimming competitively for 5 years. He has coached the 8 and unders during the Polar Piranhas season and has worked as a volunteer for the 8 and unders the past 2 years. Sebi has won 3 coaches awards across multiple teams and is extremely dedicated to the sport and coaching.
Santi has been swimming at Pinecrest for over 8 years and is excited to be back for another season. Throughout his time on the team, he has enjoyed making lasting memories and being part of the Pinecrest community. This is Santi’s first year coaching, and he is looking forward to helping younger swimmers build confidence, improve their skills, and have fun in the pool.
Santi currently attends The Heights School, where he also plays varsity lacrosse. Outside of swimming, he enjoys spending time with friends and competing in sports. He is excited for a great season and cannot wait to cheer on the Piranhas!
Kayla has been a swimmer with Pinecrest since she was 5 and she is very excited to join the coaching staff. Kayla is a rising sophomore at Oakton High School and has swam at Districts and Regionals for Oakton Swim & Dive. She currently does club swim with Machine Aquatics. Kayla has swam in Divisionals, Divisional Relay Carnival, and Individual All Stars for Pinecrest. She has also earned the High Point award and Piranha of the Week.
This will be Kayla’s first year coaching with Pinecrest having prior experience with PeeWees and Oakton Swim Club. She can't wait for the summer to start and to work with everyone on Pinecrest!
